Our Mission
Education
The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the state’s only academic medical center. Our ACGME-accredited radiology residency program requires one intern year and 48 months of residency. Residents rotate, on a two-week block schedule, through the divisions of Neuroradiology, Body Imaging, Breast Imaging, Emergency Radiology, Cardiac Imaging, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Pediatric Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Interventional Radiology. Our experienced faculty of over 40 members, educate and mentor our residents through viewbox teaching, daily lectures developed on the CORE study guide curriculum, and by participating in research projects together.
The Radiology residents utilize a two-tiered call system that is completely resident managed. Call time is temporarily reduced for residents studying for the CORE in the months prior to the exam. The department funds registration and travel for away conferences, including AIRP and board prep courses. Residents are provided internal moonlighting opportunities during their PGY-4 and PGY-5 years.
Research
The Division of Radiology Research has had primary investigators pursuing research in oncology (head and neck, lung, liver, colorectal, renal, melanoma, breast, etc.), thoracic, GU, GI, cardiac, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear, neuro, fetal, and musculoskeletal imaging as well as epidemiologic and health disparities research and imaging and animal imaging. We participate in multiple national clinical trials (including ACRIN), have received NIH and industry grant funding, lead multi-institutional studies, and have received local and national awards and recognition for our research, including recognition from national news organizations. We have developed several patent-pending image processing algorithms and have built a robust research infrastructure for retrospective and prospective studies.
For residents, we hold a monthly journal club, provide two weeks for resident scholarly activity each year, offer additional elective time for scholarly activity, and host a Radiology Scholarly Activity Day each year that coincides with resident graduation day. We have a written policy for resident travel to national meetings that includes attendance at the entire conference if presenting and various levels of travel reimbursement depending on the meeting and presentation type.
Patient care
The Department of Radiology provides imaging and interventional services for the 700-bed University of Mississippi Medical Center. The Medical Center encompasses University Hospital (Adult), Conerly Critical Care Hospital, Children's of Mississippi, and Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants. UMMC is also a Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Organ Transplantation Facility. In addition, outreach radiologic services are provided to local and regional community hospitals. Interventional services are also provided to the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Hospital and Merit Health River Oaks Hospital.
Throughout the divisions of Neuroradiology, Body Imaging, Breast Imaging, Emergency Radiology, Cardiac Imaging, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Pediatric Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Interventional Radiology, our department provides support for numerous tumor boards and multidisciplinary conferences. UMMC Radiology is the only provider of pediatric MR with monitored sedation in the state of Mississippi.
